Like a Third World Dictatorship; Loyalty is what matters!
we’ve all heard the clichés;
- Hard to find good help any more
- the Millennials are so entitled
- no one wants to be told what to do
- they can get a job anywhere
- everyone thinks they’re a chef
and any number of other complaints about staffing; especially if you are in a resort town or other transient based labor force.
Working in the LA market for decades; I never gave much value to ‘Loyalty’ in an employee; the one’s worth keeping and The Leaders I was hopefully able to reward enough to stick around; the others chose their own fate of mediocrity or departure.
In a labor market with far more opportunities than workers and seasonal transitions; you find the need to adjust; expectations / standards / demands as the pool is less driven to excel knowing they can get a job across the street and the Leaders who do care and who can make a difference have unlimited opportunities for advancement beyond your doors.
This means regardless of talent level and frustratingly all too often; regardless of attitude level; you welcome, need and hang on to the ones that return year after year!
At a time when hiring criteria is ignored versus getting any warm body in; reaching for the Stars requires new paths, new training methods, new rewards to maintain growth and excellence.
It also brings to life a prophetic cliche:
- Better Than Nothing!
